You can still include money to start that college fund, but also consider selecting a personal gift that will be remembered and maybe even cherished as the child grows up.

One idea I would suggest, is purchasing a gift that is personalized with the child’s name and birth date. As a mother of three, my favorite baptism gift that my children received was a personalized baby cross imprinted with a bedtime prayer. A baby cross, whether it is personalized or not, will be displayed in the child’s bedroom for years to come. If you’re Catholic, a personalized first rosary with a coordinating rosary case, is the way to go. The rosary can be personalized on the back of the cross with the child’s initials. The coordinating rosary case can be personalized with the child’s name, or initials, and the baptism date.

Other great ideas include baptismal picture frames, stuffed animals with personalization, or a personalized candle that can be used on the baptism anniversary date. These items can be saved as a sentimental keepsake or used to decorate the nursery.

The great thing about a sentimental gift is that the gift can become an heirloom that will last far beyond the receiver’s lifetime. Your baptism gifts could potentially be passed down from generation to generation as a constant reminder of the family’s Christian faith and heritage.

Tips For Buying Baptism Gifts

A baptism is a beautiful time in the life of a child, yet many children are baptized at a time in their life that they will not be able to recall it later. It is the gifts that are given at the time of the baptism that will likely make an impression on the child later on. For this reason, you should definitely choose a gift that is meaningful. Baptism gifts are different for every gift giver and seemingly every family. If you would like to give a gift that both the child and the parents will appreciate, you may want to look into purchasing the christening or Christian clothing that is appropriate for the baptism for the child. Other gifts that you may want to consider buying could be:

- A rosary
- Engraved cross pendant
- Engraved picture frame
- Personalized blanket with baptism date on it
- Personalized bible

Of course, if you are the godparent of the child who is being baptized you may want to consider a special gift that will memorialize the connection that is formed when you accept the invitation to be a child’s godparent. Some thoughtful godparent gifts may include an engraved trinket box with the baptism date and your name, a tile with the dates and your names on it, a photo album from the baptism day that has been personalized, or anything else that you would like to give that will memorialize the date.
